Dommengang formed as a hard-edged post-psych and space rock trio whose chugging sound they call "Road Trip, Head Trip" music. Their influences surface in the hard-driving debut Everybody's Boogie from 2015, drawing from Can, Amon Düül II, and Neu! alongside Hawkwind's psychedelic space rock and the endless roadhouse boogie of ZZ Top and Canned Heat. After settling in the Pacific Northwest, the group spent two years in steady jamming sessions that shaped the songs on 2023's Wished Eye.

Guitarist and vocalist Sig Wilson had previously toured with Scout Niblett and played in the Castanets. Bassist Brian Markham and drummer Adam Bulgasem also perform with Ancient Sky, and all three serve as the backing band for Holy Sons, led by Emil Amos. The trio first convened in Brooklyn, New York during mid-2014 outside their Holy Sons commitments and prior to signing with Thrill Jockey. Everybody's Boogie appeared in May 2015. Following heavy touring across both sides of the Atlantic, they paused, relocated to Los Angeles—the first occasion the full lineup shared one city—and returned to the studio in late 2017. The region's arid climate colored their evolving heaviness with electric blues. Producer and engineer Tim Green of the Fucking Champs, whose prior sessions include work with Joanna Newsom, Howlin' Rain, Sleepy Sun, and Fresh and Onlys, recorded the expanded sound while carving space in the mix that evoked the feel of older analog recordings. Love Jail emerged at the close of January 2018.

In March 2019 the band issued the advance singles "Kudzu" and "Jerusalem Cricket" ahead of the May arrival of their third album, No Keys; the latter track included guest vocals by Camilla Saufly-Mitchell of Golden Void. Once touring for No Keys concluded, the members departed Los Angeles for Portland, Oregon, absorbing the region's natural beauty and unhurried atmosphere. Over the next two years they convened several times weekly, allowing fresh material to develop through extended improvisation. The resulting fourth LP, Wished Eye, arrived in 2023 and featured a guest turn on bass clarinet from Jonathan Sielaff of Golden Retriever.
