A Baltimore, Maryland quartet blending post-punk rhythms with noise-rock intensity, Dope Body positioned their music between crowded dancefloors and chaotic mosh pits. Their approach suggested an imagined realm in which the Jesus Lizard reinterpreted Gang of Four through a distorted sound system, an aesthetic they pursued across releases such as the 2012 album Natural History. Following a short-lived disbandment in 2016, the group resumed live performances in 2019 and delivered a fresh studio effort, Crack a Light, in 2020.

Formed in 2008 by Andrew Laumann, David Jacober, Zachary Utz, and John Jones, the band initially planned only a single appearance before their rapport prompted continued collaboration. Early output arrived rapidly, beginning with the 2009 EP 20 Pound Brick on Watercolor and continuing with the 2010 split release Self Entitled on Orphan through Black Tent Press. Their first full-length, Nupping, followed in 2011. Persistent live activity led to a partnership with Drag City for the 2012 album Natural History. After extensive touring they issued Lifer in 2014; excess recordings from those sessions were reworked into the 2015 collection Kunk. The track “Old Grey” preceded that album by two months when it appeared as a single in June.

In April 2016 the quartet declared their dissolution after a series of final shows in Baltimore. Members then pursued separate endeavors until 2019, when reunion performances revived their momentum. The lo-fi, mixtape-style album Home Body emerged in May 2020, its quick recording and mixing occurring amid COVID-19 quarantines and its songs often reflecting isolation and unrest. Later that year Drag City released Crack a Light, the band’s second full-length since reuniting, arriving in October 2020.
