Tera Melos fuse punk's raw force with prog rock's elaborate structures, relying on abrupt metric changes and fragmented, finger-tapped guitar lines that echo the approaches of Don Caballero and Hella. While intricate guitar work remains central alongside angular bass figures and fractured, jazz-inflected drumming, the group places greater emphasis on dynamic contrast, weaving ambient electronics and minimal vocal passages into quieter passages that temper their denser, noisier stretches.

Guitarist Nick Reinhart, drummer Jeff Worms, and bassist Nate Latona formed Tera Melos in 2004 after earlier involvement in the hardcore acts No Regard, Hoods, and Stabbed in the Throat. Within months the trio began performing, quickly gaining notice on the Sacramento circuit through unpredictable shows that featured cartwheels, guitar-stand maneuvers, and amp flips. Their self-released debut, Tera Melos, appeared in 2005. Extensive road work followed until Worms departed after completing the Drugs to the Dear Youth EP, seeking a more settled life. Vince Rogers assumed drumming duties, and the band aligned with Sargent House, the label also home to These Arms Are Snakes and Maps & Atlases. That same year Sargent House reissued Drugs to the Dear Youth on CD, issued a five-song split with By the End of Tonight, and supported further U.S. dates alongside Heavy Heavy Low Low and the Fall of Troy.

John Clardy replaced Rogers ahead of the 2010 album Patagonian Rats. The follow-up, X'ed Out, adopted a more straightforward stance and arrived on Sargent House in 2013. After touring in support, the members paused for several years to explore outside projects. Tera Melos resurfaced in 2017 with the studio album Trash Generator.
