Biography
Indie rock outfit TTNG originated in Oxford, England during 2004, when the members impulsively selected the moniker This Town Needs Guns to satirize the locale’s minimal criminal activity. Centered on vocalist and guitarist Stuart Smith together with lead guitarist Tim Collis, the group experienced repeated changes in its rhythm section until bassist Dan Adams and drummer Chris Collis stabilized the lineup ahead of the 2008 debut album Animals. Sharing an affinity for shifting time signatures with acts such as Chavez and Owls, the band attracted Sargent House, which reissued the record to greater visibility in 2009. Jamie Cooper subsequently assumed bass duties, and Stuart Smith disclosed his 2011 departure to prioritize family commitments, at which point Pennines singer and guitarist Henry Tremain stepped in. Further personnel shifts followed, prompting the ensemble—after repeated misreadings of its full name as earnest commentary—to adopt the abbreviation TTNG in 2013, immediately following the January appearance of its second album, 13.0.0.0.0.
Over the ensuing years the band logged repeated tours throughout the United States and Europe, supporting American Football and Foxing among others. Defined still by elaborate instrumental work alongside vocals recalling Pavement, the configuration of Tremain, Collis, and Collis traveled to Chicago to cut the third album, Disappointment Island, which Sargent House released in 2016. Two years afterward, to commemorate the tenth anniversary of their first record, TTNG issued the newly tracked Animals Acoustic.
