Biography
Chicago songwriter Evan Weiss channels his creative energies through the recording project Into It. Over It., stepping forward as a solo artist after years spent in multiple bands that include Up Up Down Down Left Right Left Right B A Start, Labour, Map the Growth, the Funeral Bird, Hiroshima Mon'Amour, and Sleeper Agents. The project merges polished pop songcraft with introspective, articulate lyrics and a vocal approach that registers emotional tension yet refuses to yield to it. Weiss introduced Into It. Over It. via the 2009 release 52 Weeks, reached a compositional peak with the 2013 album Intersections and the 2016 album Standards, revisited selected material from 52 Weeks on the 2023 album 15 Years, and assembled the glossy emo-pop set Interesting Decisions in 2024 to compile recordings made between 2020 and 2023.
The endeavor originated in 2007 when Weiss committed to writing and recording one new song each week throughout an entire year, an undertaking that produced the double album 52 Weeks upon its 2009 completion. He next concentrated on location-themed compositions, issuing them first as individual singles and later gathering them as the 2011 collection Twelve Towns. Also in 2011, Into It. Over It. delivered its initial album of original material, Proper, on No Sleep Records.
During the same period Weiss joined forces with the equally active Mike Kinsella, whose projects include Owen and Joan of Arc, along with bassist Matthew Frank to create the band Their / They're / There, which issued two EPs in 2013. Weiss simultaneously continued developing Into It. Over It., resulting in the full-length Intersections, issued by Triple Crown Records in 2013. In February 2015, during a touring pause, Weiss and live drummer Josh Sparks retreated to a remote Vermont cabin for a month largely without internet or electricity to compose new material; once the road schedule concluded they tracked the songs at John Vanderslice’s Tiny Telephone Studio in San Francisco, yielding the March 2016 album Standards.
Following a four-year hiatus Weiss reactivated the project with the 2020 album Figure, a song cycle he characterized as an examination of earlier missteps and an effort to reconcile their aftermath. By that year he had expanded Into It. Over It. into a full band by adding Adam Beck, Matthew Frank, and Joseph Shadid, and the group began regular sessions at Chicago’s Type One Studios that generated tracks released on EPs, singles, and split releases alongside Hikes, Tyler Daniel Bean, and Malegoat. Weiss subsequently remixed and remastered those 2020–2023 recordings, incorporated three previously unreleased songs, and presented the results as the 2024 album Interesting Decisions, whose title derives from his personal maxim, “If you cannot make a good decision, make an interesting one.” The collection appeared after the 2023 album 15 Years, on which Weiss marked the anniversary of 52 Weeks by remixing or re-recording fifteen of its tracks.
