Biography
Emerging in 2003, Make Believe drew from another reshuffling of musicians rooted in Chicago’s 1990s emo and indie rock circles, among them Joan of Arc, Cap’n Jazz, Owls, and Ghosts and Vodka. Guitarist Sam Zurick, bassist Bobby Burg, and cousins Nate Kinsella on drums and Tim Kinsella on vocals formed the lineup. The quartet’s experimental indie punk first surfaced during spring 2004 with a five-song self-titled EP released by Flameshovel. Their chaotic yet exhilarating approach earned favorable notice, prompting the group to issue The Pink 7" that autumn. October 2005 brought the hard-rocking full-length debut Shock of Being, which met with an enthusiastic reception while the band’s volatile live performances toured alongside the Good Life, Hella, and the Paper Chase, extending their reach inside the indie rock community. A summer 2006 stint supporting Cursive paved the way for the fall arrival of their sophomore album, Of Course.
