Biography
The Dwarves, fronted by vocalist Blag Dahlia and guitarist He Who Cannot Be Named, specialize in deliberately crude, high-velocity punk rock laced with overt defiance. Their lyrics revel in every form of misconduct, while album artwork routinely displays full-frontal nudity. During the 1990s their concerts frequently ran under twenty minutes and sometimes featured direct physical attacks on spectators, a combination that secured the group lasting cult notoriety. Underground acclaim arrived with the 1990 release Blood Guts & Pussy, a fourteen-minute broadside against decorum, yet the band shifted toward milder territory on 1993’s Sugarfix. Following a period of inactivity they resurfaced with 1997’s The Dwarves Are Young and Good Looking, then blended increasingly melodic arrangements with their signature lewd subject matter on 2014’s The Dwarves Invented Rock & Roll and 2023’s Concept Album.
Originally formed in Chicago as the teen garage-rock group Suburban Nightmare, the band retained traces of that garage-psych approach on their debut LP, 1986’s Horror Stories. After that record the Dwarves moved to San Francisco and adopted a quicker, more sordid punk style, first documented on the 1988 EP Lucifer’s Crank. In 1990 they joined Sub Pop and issued their most infamous album, Blood Guts & Pussy, a ten-song, thirteen-minute onslaught housed in a sleeve showing two naked women drenched in blood and a nude dwarf shielding his groin with a rabbit. The record dominated conversation in the independent press, and the band toured relentlessly, leaving behind self-inflicted wounds, drug-fueled anecdotes (including the enduring rumor that bassist XXXXX vanished during a 1992 Detroit crack binge while supporting 1991’s equally sordid Thank Heaven for Little Girls), explicit stage antics, and the debris of countless fifteen-minute performances.
The group predictably collapsed after an unsuccessful publicity stunt: shortly before Sugarfix appeared in 1993 they circulated a statement claiming He Who Cannot Be Named had died, and the album itself contained a dedication to the guitarist, who was in fact alive. Sub Pop severed ties once the ruse was exposed, prompting an extended hiatus. The Dwarves reconvened for 1997’s The Dwarves Are Young and Good Looking; Epitaph then signed them ahead of 2000’s The Dwarves Come Clean. Four years later The Dwarves Must Die arrived, featuring contributions from Dexter Holland of the Offspring, Nick Oliveri of Queens of the Stone Age, Nash Kato of Urge Overkill, and voice actor Gary Owens. In 2009 the band began recording with former members Salt Peter and Vadge Moore rather than celebrity guests, resulting in 2010’s The Dwarves Are Born Again. The EP Fake ID followed in 2011, and 2014 brought The Dwarves Invented Rock & Roll. Burger Records issued the tenth album, Take Back the Night, in 2018. After Burger ceased operations amid scandal in 2020, the Dwarves turned to their own Greedy imprint for 2023’s Concept Album, an unexpectedly buoyant and pop-leaning set that nevertheless included paeans to recklessness such as “Stabbed My Dad,” “Kill or Be Killed,” and “Terrorist of Love.”
