Often recognized simply as MTX, the American punk rock band the Mr. T Experience arose from the Bay Area milieu that also produced Green Day, Operation Ivy, and NOFX. Fronted since the mid-'80s by singer/guitarist Frank Portman—the group's sole enduring member—the outfit specialized in satirical punk-pop built around pop-culture references and memorable hooks. From 1986 through 2004 the lineup shifted repeatedly yet yielded ten studio albums, among them the well-regarded Our Bodies Our Selves (1993), Love Is Dead (1996), and Alcatraz (1999). After a twelve-year break during which Portman concentrated on writing, the band returned with its eleventh album, 2016's King Dork Approximately, The Album; the Shards MTX series of B-sides and rarities collections followed in the late 2010s and early 2020s.

Portman and original bassist Byron Stamatatos launched the Mr. T Experience in the mid-'80s, completing the initial roster with drummer Alex Laipeneiks and guitarist Jon Von Zelowitz. Once two early albums appeared on local imprints, Stamatatos departed and Aaron Rubin took his place; the revised quartet then signed with Lookout! Records. After completing 1992's Milk Milk Lemonade, Zelowitz exited, leaving a trio that issued the Gun Crazy EP and the Our Bodies Our Selves LP in 1993. Laipeneiks and Rubin soon followed Zelowitz out the door.

In the late '90s, Portman worked with drummer Jim Pittman and bassist Joel Reader on a sequence of releases that shaped the band's middle era. The bubblegum-punk of Love Is Dead (1996) and Revenge Is Sweet, And So Are You (1997) led into Alcatraz and Road to Ruin, the latter a full-album cover of the Ramones record of the same name. After Reader's departure, Gabe Meline joined in time to record the Miracle of Shame EP, released in 2000; two years later Meline stepped aside and "Bobby J" Jordan filled the bass chair. Portman also added guitarist Ted Angel, restoring a quartet that delivered the tenth MTX album, Yesterday Rules, in 2004—their last for an extended period.

Throughout the hiatus Portman issued his debut novel, King Dork, in spring 2006, then Andromeda Klein (2009) and King Dork Approximately (2014). The companion soundtrack album King Dork Approximately, The Album appeared in 2016, followed by the three-volume rarities series Shards, Vol. 1 (2017), Vol. 2 (2018), and Vol. 3 (2021).
