German composer Schoener pursues sound as an intrepid discoverer, venturing beyond European conventions in search of stimulus and shaping striking works from improbable origins both organic and technological. Following a lengthy expedition across the Far East, during which he examined spiritual traditions alongside musical ones, he determined that creators achieve real potency only by fully engaging their personal cultural legacies. His 1973 album Meditation, for example, conveyed the Eastern-linked vision of spiritual reflection by means of synthesized textures anchored in Western practice.
