Biography
Ed Calle, the Miami-based saxophonist born in Caracas to Spanish parents, traces his musical path to his father’s deep passion for the art. After the family settled in the United States in 1966, his father urged him to begin music lessons; Calle selected the tenor saxophone and advanced swiftly, devoting nearly every free hour to practice.
At the University of Miami he concluded that music was his vocation and completed a master’s degree in jazz performance. Before finishing his coursework he already appeared with Gloria Estefan and the Miami Sound Machine and toured alongside Julio Iglesias and Bob James. Further sideman engagements brought him together with Arturo Sandoval, Jon Secada, Vanessa Williams, and Frank Sinatra, while he also supplied parts for numerous television and motion-picture soundtracks.
Calle’s style fuses his Latin heritage with an abiding interest in mathematics, reflected in the bachelor’s degree he earned in the subject from Florida International University. He conveys this blend of technical insight and cultural tradition to elementary-school audiences during his visits as a traveling music instructor. His own recordings—Nightgames (1986), Double Talk (1996), and Sunset Harbor (1999)—further illustrate his command and commitment; Concord Jazz later released Twilight in 2001.
