Educated at Ryder College, the dynamic American performer Ellen Greene launched her screen career with a starring turn in Next Stop Greenwich Village (1978). Steady work followed in modest projects until her breakthrough came via the role of the ditzy Audrey in the 1982 Broadway sensation Little Shop of Horrors. Few original cast members reprised their parts in the 1986 film adaptation, yet Greene’s luminous portrayal there and in Talk Radio (1988) prompted widespread forecasts of imminent fame. Viewing herself as already established, she carried herself with corresponding assurance. When cast as a troubled rock performer who embraces evangelism in the 1989 television film Glory! Glory!, Greene grew exacting and assertive, exercising authority in ways that implied long-accustomed preeminence. This commanding approach ultimately proved effective, elevating Glory! Glory! into a standout production anchored by her commanding lead work. Good opportunities persisted afterward across theater and television, culminating in her 1992 contribution as one of several stage veterans supplying voices for the animated feature Rock a Doodle.
