Emily Kinney built her reputation through her portrayal of Beth Greene on AMC's hit horror drama The Walking Dead, yet she maintains a parallel career as a singer and songwriter. Raised in Nebraska, she relocated to New York City with the goal of establishing herself as an actor, completing theater studies at New York University before taking on several off-Broadway roles. Her Broadway debut arrived in 2008 when she played Anna in Spring Awakening, followed a year later by a part in August: Osage County.

During 2011 she joined the cast of The Walking Dead as Beth Greene while simultaneously issuing her first EP, Blue Toothbrush. Periodic musical moments on the series allowed her to perform Tom Waits' "Hold On" and to share a duet of the traditional Scottish song "The Parting Glass" with Lauren Cohan, the actor who portrayed Beth's sister Maggie. Her second EP, Expired Love, appeared in 2013 and received a reissue the next year that added two new tracks.

After leaving The Walking Dead in 2014, Kinney earned recurring parts on the Showtime adult drama Masters of Sex and the Cinemax medical series The Knick in 2015. She also spent that year touring the United States behind her debut full-length album, This Is War, which arrived in October.
