Biography
Detroit techno veteran Robert Hood and his daughter Lyric operate as Floorplan, producing uplifting dance music grounded in gospel and soul traditions. The project name signals an even stronger emphasis on club environments than Hood's solo output or releases under aliases such as Monobox and the Vision. During the 1990s Hood launched Floorplan initially as a solo endeavor, highlighting soul, disco, and funk foundations within techno and house through looped samples drawn from acts like Kool & the Gang. He revived the name in 2010, redirecting its focus toward gospel elements. The well-received album Paradise arrived in 2013 and yielded the significant club track "Never Grow Old." In 2016 Lyric joined as an official partner, converting the project into a duo that issued its second album, Victorious. The pair subsequently delivered the 2019 album Supernatural, the 2024 release The Master's Plan, and multiple further singles.
Hood introduced the alias in 1996 via several 12" singles on Drama, a subsidiary of his M-Plant imprint. Duet later replaced that label and put out two additional Floorplan singles in the early 2000s. After an eight-year silence, "Living It Up" surfaced on M-Plant in 2010. The project then accelerated, issuing one EP annually until the 2013 album Paradise. Numerous selections across those EPs and the album carried strong gospel samples that mirrored Hood's devout Christian faith. Several cuts achieved club success, above all "Never Grow Old," constructed around an ecstatic sample from Aretha Franklin's Amazing Grace LP. A 2014 remix of the enduring track earned further praise.
Victorious, Floorplan's second album, emerged on M-Plant in 2016. Several tracks were co-produced by Lyric Hood, turning the release into a family project. After extensive global touring and non-album singles such as "Let the Church" and "So Glad," the duo issued its third full-length, Supernatural, on Aus Music in 2019. The following year brought the double single "The Struggle" and "Save the Children," then early 2021 saw "Right There" and "Holy Ghost." Later that year another double single paired "Get My Mansion Ready" with "Out of Control." Hood advanced his reissue series by restoring the earlier Floorplan single "Shop"/"Learn" in 2022. The duo also delivered a remix of Joe Smooth's house classic "Promised Land." In 2023 the double A-side "We Give Thee Honor"/"Makes Me Wanna" appeared, succeeded by "The Curse Breaker"/"What You Need." Floorplan's fourth album, The Master's Plan, reached Classic in 2024 and featured guests Honey Dijon, EarthTone, and Dames Brown.
