A Minneapolis native who has remained based in the city of his birth, multi-instrumentalist Andrew Broder initially turned to music while seeking refuge from everyday surroundings. Secluding himself in a basement, he mastered an array of instruments and simultaneously gravitated toward the escapist qualities of hip-hop. After falling ill and leaving school, Broder committed fully to his craft, shaping idiosyncratic pieces that fused a hip-hop foundation with an array of additional textures and instrumentation. These recordings caught the ear of the influential British trip-hop imprint Ninja Tune, which issued a self-titled Fog anthology in 2002 and soon followed it with the Check Fraud 12". To bring the project onstage, Broder then recruited three Minneapolis players—guitarist Jeremy Ylvisaker, bassist Baer Erickson, and drummer Martin Dosh. The 2003 album Ether Teeth again appeared under Broder’s sole direction, whereas 10th Avenue Freakout arrived in 2005. By the time Ditherer emerged in 2007, he had settled on a consistent rhythm section of bassist Mark Erickson and drummer Tim Glenn.
