Biography
Frantz Casseus emerged as a guitarist from Haiti whose playing integrated classical traditions with folk elements, above all the indigenous music of his homeland. Born into an influential household in Port-au-Prince, he ranked among the earliest players on the island to present the guitar unaccompanied in recital, rapidly establishing a singular presence within the local music scene. Concerts began for him at age 23; although his initial repertoire remained rooted in formal classical literature, he later turned to adapting and reshaping Haitian folk material into classically conceived suites. A practical constraint narrowed the works he could offer, since no appropriate vocalist was available. That obstacle lifted once he encountered Lolita Cuevas, the vocalist born in Puerto Rico and raised in Haiti, after which the pair performed together as interpreters.
