Freyr, a singer and songwriter of Swedish-Icelandic heritage, first surfaced in 2018 with a melodic yet melancholic brand of accessible Scandinavian indie-folk.

His birthplace was Sweden, where early life involved deep engagement with jazz, classical, folk, heavy metal, pop, and indie rock while dividing time between his Olympian father and medical-researcher mother in his native country and his grandfather amid Iceland’s rugged terrain. Initial instrumental study centered on the flute before shifting to classical and electric guitar. During high school he performed with multiple groups and later became a member of Lärkträdet (The Larch), an eclectic music collective based in his hometown of Umeå. Relocating to Stockholm in 2017, he enrolled in a philosophy program and began composing material influenced by Bon Iver, Jose Gonzalez, and Sigur Rós. Producer Neil Johnson (Joshua Hyslop, Austin Basham) discovered one such recording and guided the creation of the debut single “Over My Head.” Issued in 2018, the track surpassed 200,000 streams, prompting a recording contract with Nettwerk. Returning to the studio with Johnson, Freyr assembled the EP I’m Sorry, which appeared in 2020.
