Biography
FunkinEven, born Steven Tony Julien in West London, England, pulls from George Clinton, Prince, Larry Heard, the Neptunes, Bugz in the Attic, and Sa-Ra in modestly different proportions. One of the central figures tied to the respected Eglo imprint, he first appeared on the label in November 2009 with the robust “Kleer,” an entirely up-to-date synth-funk single carrying vocals from Fatima, another regular at East London’s Plastic People club. Over the following years he stayed difficult to forecast, shifting among sources while stamping each successive 12" with a personal stamp. Standout examples include the 2010 Fatima production “Soul Glo,” the Roland’s Jam 12" issued on Eglo in 2011, the 2012 Eglo Fatima pairing Phoneline, and Species, released on Broadwalk in 2013. Additional activity encompasses joint work with Delroy Edwards and Kyle Hall under the FunkinEvil banner, remixes for Ikonika and Ossie, and further material on his own Apron label. January 2014 saw the arrival of a three-track 12" of minimal synth and acid issued as St. Julien on Apron.
