Throughout his career, Steve Spacek drew inspiration from Leon Ware, Ronald Isley, Marvin Gaye, and Curtis Mayfield. Although lacking raw power, his voice generated silky atmospheres that remained appealing during a period marked by flash and exaggerated emotion. The London-based singer and producer, born Steve White, created two outstanding ambient soul albums with his group Spacek before relocating to California. There he completed his debut solo album, receiving occasional contributions from heavyweight producer Jay Dee and undervalued Motown figure Ware. Space Shift appeared in 2005 on the Sound in Color label, keeping the dreamy atmospheres of the Spacek releases yet proving juicier and looser through harder-hitting beats and a relaxed state of mind. After issuing a pair of 2006 EPs on Japan’s Jazzy Sport label, Spacek explored abstract downtempo electronic music under the names Blackpocket and Beat Spacek while also collaborating with Mark Pritchard as Africa HiTech.
