Biography
South London, England's Spacek emerged as the clearest embodiment of trip-hop bleeding into R&B, inadvertently shaping alternative R&B years before the label gained traction. The three-piece came together in the middle of the 1990s when bassist, singer, and principal songwriter Steve Spacek (born Steve White) met guitarist Edmund Cavill via a shared acquaintance, while former MC Morgan Zarate (aka Morgan Spacek) was recruited by Spacek's management to handle drums. Island Blue in the U.K. secured the group by late 1998.
From the Clapham facility that Steve Spacek constructed following an early-1990s publishing agreement (during which he wrote and produced for Stex and additional artists), the band built significant buzz in the second half of 1999 after a white-label pressing of debut single "Eve" reached select DJs. Its plush rhythm, understated yet tuneful bass, flowing strings, and Steve Spacek's smooth vocals made plain that the collective aim to "bring soul music and R&B up to date" was taking shape. Two full-length projects followed: Curvatia (Island, 2001) and the leaner Vintage Hi-Tech (Studio !K7, 2003).
Steve Spacek later pursued a solo career under his given name, issued material as Blackpocket and Beat Spacek, and joined Mark Pritchard for the Africa HiTech project. Zarate issued solo work on Hyperdub and formed the duo We Are Shining alongside A-Cyde.
