Emerging from Chicago, the four-piece Ganser initially anchored its approach in moody post-punk colored by gothic atmospheres, then gradually folded in broader art-rock elements that reshaped its sonic identity. Themes of doom, anxiety, and apocalyptic dread threaded through the lyrics and aligned with the group’s brooding instrumental palette, notably across the 2020 release Just Look at That Sky.

The project originated in 2014 as a duo assembled by keyboardist and vocalist Nadia Garofalo alongside bassist and vocalist Alicia Gaines. The pair first connected while attending art school, where their mutual enthusiasm for experimental music and cinema created an immediate rapport. Guitarist Charlie Landsman and drummer Brian Cundiff joined in subsequent years, and by 2015 the expanded lineup had settled into a shadowy post-punk aesthetic, issuing its earliest single. A pair of self-released cassette EPs followed in 2016, paving the way for the full-length debut Odd Talk in 2018. That album earned favorable notices and considerable media attention. One year later Ganser issued the self-released 10" EP You Must Be New Here. As the band gravitated toward denser, more intricate arrangements, both the recorded clarity and prevailing atmosphere of desolation intensified on the 2020 follow-up Just Look at That Sky.
