Biography
From Lafayette, Colorado, Gauntlet Hair emerged as the creative vehicle for Andy R. and Craig Nice, who first started collaborating on music at age 15. Their expansive, shape-shifting avant pop generated considerable early attention throughout 2010, even prior to the appearance of any official single, with observers noting echoes of Yeasayer, Animal Collective, Surfer Blood, and Passion Pit. During the spring the duo performed at Mexico’s MtyMx festival within a Rhinocerpolis-curated showcase from the Denver venue. Local producer Pictureplane included the track “I Was Thinking...” on one of his mixtapes, which further amplified online discussion of the band within indie circles. The blog Gorilla vs. Bear subsequently issued Gauntlet Hair’s first 7", titled I Was Thinking.../Our Scenery, via its Forest Family label in a limited run of 500 copies during summer 2010. Following additional brief releases, among them the Mexican Summer single Out, Don't/Heave, the band delivered its self-titled debut full-length on Dead Oceans in October 2011. The follow-up album Stills arrived in 2013 and reflected the pair’s turn toward ’80s goth and alternative rock textures.
