Biography
Gentleman's Dub Club, a nine-piece reggae and electronic outfit, maintain a defining presence on the U.K. festival circuit through their distinctive approach to dub and soundsystem traditions. The members first connected in Leeds during 2006 while enrolled as students, regularly attending SubDub, a monthly event hosted by the local Iration Steppas crew, which solidified their shared passion for the culture. Loosely fronted by vocalist Jonathan Scratchley, the lineup includes Tommy Evans on drums, Luke Allwood on keys, Nick Tyson on guitar, Toby Davies handling bass and synths, Niall Lavelle on percussion, Matt Roberts on trumpet, Kieren Gallagher on sax, and Harry Devenish managing sound. Scratchley co-established Croatia's Outlook Festival in 2008, with the band returning annually for more than a decade.
Their debut EP, Members Only, arrived the next year via Ranking Records. From 2009 through 2012 the collective honed its stage presence with near-yearly appearances at major British events such as Glastonbury, Bestival, and Boomtown. The 2013 release of their first album, FOURtyFOUR—named after the address of their original rehearsal space—marked a milestone. Switching to Easy Star for the follow-up, 2015's Big Smoke, represented a label shift. Their third long-player, Dubtopia, arrived in 2017 and incorporated an expanded roster of collaborators: Lady Chann, Taiwan MC, Parly B, and Eva Lazarus. The 2018 fourth album, Lost in Space, brought in Swedish reggae star Million Stylez alongside revered reggae musician Winston Francis.
Although the COVID-19 pandemic initially disrupted sessions for their fifth studio effort, the musicians seized the chance to strip their sound back to essentials, yielding the 2021 album Down to Earth.
