Grian Chatten, the singer and songwriter whose upbringing in Dublin has remained central to his sense of self, first gained recognition as the frontman of Fontaines D.C. while also issuing occasional solo material. His willingness to confront darker impulses yielded lyrics of striking insight and reflection, above all on his first solo album, Chaos for the Fly, issued in 2023.

Chatten spent his childhood in Skerries, in northern Dublin, surrounded by a large household steeped in music. His father played instruments, and his mother together with his five siblings often performed songs for one another. It therefore seemed natural when he started composing his own songs at the age of nine. After finishing at Skerries Community College he enrolled at BIMM, the Irish music college, where he encountered the future members of Fontaines D.C. Together they issued the band’s debut album, Dogrel, in 2019. The record conveyed the texture of life in the Irish capital without evasion and propelled the group to wider attention. Their follow-up, A Hero’s Death, examined the detached sensation that accompanied constant touring and the experience of hearing audiences connect with intensely personal songs.

Chatten settled permanently in London during the COVID-19 lockdowns, an event that sharpened his awareness of identity and left him with lingering guilt over having left Ireland, to which he felt deeply indebted. Those tensions found expression and resolution on Fontaines D.C.’s third album, Skinty Fia. While touring in support of the second and third records he continued developing solo work that ventured into fresh sonic territory, among them acoustic anthems and trippy vaudeville. The process reached its conclusion with Chaos for the Fly in 2023, allowing him to release accumulated negativity through the most intimate lyrics he had yet produced.
