Biography
Griselda Records functions as the hub connecting the projects of Westside Gunn, Conway the Machine, and Benny the Butcher. These Buffalo rappers extended the stark, unforgiving lineage of East Coast hip-hop pioneered by Kool G Rap & DJ Polo, Wu-Tang Clan, and Mobb Deep. During the early 2010s the three natives cultivated an international cult audience through both joint and solo releases, secured an agreement with Shady Records in 2017, and delivered WWCD two years afterward under the Griselda banner.
Westside and his brother Conway, together with Benny and his sibling Machine Gun Black, participated in the group the Forerunners while attending high school on Buffalo’s East Side. Westside later stepped back to manage Conway before resuming his own recording activity around 2012 and establishing Griselda in 2014. Within a short span the imprint assembled an extensive roster of digital projects, several pressed in limited vinyl and compact-disc runs. A number of these appeared via smaller imprints including Effiscienz, Nature Sounds, and especially Daupe!. In 2017 Griselda formalized an exclusive arrangement with Eminem’s Shady label, an Interscope affiliate. The first release under that partnership arrived only at the close of 2019, even as Westside, Conway, and Benny continued issuing music at a rapid pace. Credited simply to Griselda, the December 2019 album WWCD—short for What Would Chine Gun Do, honoring the late Machine Gun Black—was crafted by longtime collaborators Daringer and Beat Butcha, thereby preserving the sonic thread of the crew’s earlier work. Guest spots from Raekwon, 50 Cent, and Eminem helped the project debut at number 60 on Billboard’s Top Current Albums chart.
