Biography
Guv'ner emerged in 1993 as an angular indie rock trio born from the relationship between vocalist and guitarist Charles Gansa and vocalist and bassist Pumpkin Wentzel. Once the pair relocated to New York City, Wentzel shared a demo of the band's off-kilter pop with Julia Cafritz of Pussy Galore and Free Kitten, an acquaintance from her elementary school days; Cafritz then forwarded the recording to Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth, resulting in the release of Guv'ner's first album, Hard for Measy for You, via Moore's Ecstatic Peace imprint. With Danny Tunick joining as the permanent drummer, the trio inked a deal with Merge Records for their second LP, The Hunt, which appeared in 1996 under the joint production of Cafritz and Don Fleming from Gumball. Two years after that came Spectral Worship.
