Rebecca Coseboom’s vocals lend Halou an emotional warmth that sets the project apart from the chillier textures often found in electronica. Those vocals complement the electronic constructions shaped by her husband, Ryan Coseboom. The pair first merged their abilities in Santa Cruz, California, during 1992. Several years afterward they relocated to San Francisco, where they initially operated under the name Anymore. Their earliest release as Halou, We Only Love You, appeared on the Bedazzled imprint, which soon ceased operations. The label’s collapse and weak distribution kept the album from reaching a wide audience, even though critics responded favorably and indie stations embraced it. Halou’s follow-up, Wiser, was released by Nettwerk Records in 2001. While the tracks preserved their electronic core, they incorporated live drums, an acoustic double bass, and cello. That second album also introduced Count to the lineup; he performed on drums, co-produced the sessions, and handled mixing and engineering duties. Prior to joining Halou he had applied those skills to projects by New Order, Blackalicious, Deep Blue Something, Philip Steir, Run-D.M.C., and No Doubt.
