Hash Redactor emerged from Memphis’s garage punk underground, its members initially treating the band as a side effort until their volatile material coalesced into a taut, wiry aesthetic all their own. After circulating a raw demo tape in 2017, the group issued its self-recorded debut album Drecksound two years later.

The project took shape around 2017 when bassist Meredith Lones and drummer Charlotte Watson—both still active with their longstanding band NOTS—joined forces with guitarist and vocalist Alec McIntyre, formerly of Ex-Cult, and Memphis guitarist George Williford. The quartet swiftly refined its approach, folding the abrasive attack of punk forebears such as the Fall and the Birthday Party into lyrics steeped in nihilism. Shortly after forming, they captured a self-titled demo whose tinny sonics appeared on cassette in limited quantities. Local performances soon expanded into regional touring, and the band’s sound continued to solidify over the ensuing years. They tracked the twelve-song Drecksound at home, employing modestly upgraded equipment relative to the demo. Goner Records, the longstanding garage punk label, and U.K. imprint Upset the Rhythm co-released the album in late April 2019, with a U.S. tour scheduled in support that summer.
