In 1992, Ted Pauly, Rob Viola, Jeff Paretchan, Ariel Serbin, and Danny Barria formed a band in Philadelphia that performed locally under the name Haywood. Taking cues from Archers of Loaf, Pavement, and the Replacements, the quintet developed its own intricate yet melodic style and began issuing occasional singles on an assortment of labels. After the group relocated to New York City in 1997, Magwheel Records put out its debut album, Model for a Monument, the following year, and The Self-Starter Foundation released the follow-up Men Call Him Mister in 1999. The band ultimately disbanded in 2000 before its intended third album, We Are Amateurs, You and I, could appear.
