Producer and bassist Headnodic, born Ethan Parsonage, drew early inspiration from the late-’80s and early-’90s hip-hop community in New York, the city where he spent his formative years prior to relocating to the Midwest. After determining that his strengths lay more in production than in MC work, he mastered the art of pause-tape editing and became proficient on multiple instruments, most notably the bass. He eventually returned east to enroll at Boston’s Berklee College of Music, where he encountered the musicians who would later form Crown City Rockers—originally known as Mission: until 2002. Once the group established itself in Oakland to launch its recording career, Headnodic pursued numerous side ventures and earned recognition as a skilled beatmaker. His output included the instrumental projects Headnodic Beats, Vol. 1, a breakbeat collection issued in 2000, and the solo albums Tuesday and Nemakogen, both released in 2002. He also supplied productions for Zion I & the Grouch, Mr. J. Medeiros, and Project Move while co-founding several collaborative acts in the mid- to late 2000s. These included Plate Knife Fork Spoon, which centered on the Crown City Rockers rhythm section; the Mighty Underdogs, featuring Blackalicious’ Gift of Gab alongside Latyrx’s Lateef; and the duo Megaphone, pairing him with Boston-born, former Mission: rapper Moe Pope.
