A founding participant in the Bay Area’s renowned Solesides/Quannum collective, Lyrics Born crafts affable yet socially aware hip-hop that draws from classic soul, New Orleans funk, and early rap traditions. His singular baritone delivery and melodic, dialogue-like flow stand out, complemented by earthy beats and energetic full-band shows. Initial notice arrived through his role in the abstract duo Latyrx alongside Lateef the Truth Speaker, after which he issued his first solo album, the largely self-produced Later That Day..., in 2003. A string of mixtapes came next, while 2008’s Everywhere at Once and the rock-tinged 2010 set As U Were moved toward a sleeker, mainstream-leaning aesthetic. Real People in 2015 paid tribute to his blues, jazz, and funk roots, and the 2022 project Mobile Homies: Season 1 originated from his podcast of the same title. Later that year Vision Board blended his abstract and groove-oriented impulses.

Born in Tokyo as Tsutomu “Tom” Shimura, he moved to the United States during childhood just as hip-hop emerged in the early 1980s. In the early 1990s he joined DJ Shadow, Gift of Gab, and Chief Xcel to establish the Solesides crew. The label’s debut release was a 1993 split EP pairing Shadow with Shimura, then performing as Asia Born. He soon adopted the name Lyrics Born to ensure listeners evaluated his skills rather than his background, then contributed the track “Latyrx” to the B-side of Lateef’s 1996 single “The Wreckoning,” where the two emcees overlaid completely independent verses. His first solo single, “Balcony Beach,” leaned closer to smooth soul and trip-hop than typical underground rap. Both cuts appeared on Latyrx’s 1997 album The Album, and the pair also put out the EP The Muzapper’s Mixes, which expanded into the full-length The Muzapper’s Remixes the next year.

After Solesides became Quannum Projects, the 1999 compilation Quannum Spectrum marked the relaunch and included Lyrics Born’s collaboration “I Changed My Mind” with German funk outfit the Poets of Rhythm. The 2002 single “Hello” introduced his solo debut Later That Day..., which arrived in 2003 featuring Cut Chemist, Tommy Guerrero, and his wife and frequent partner Joyo Velarde. Its reception led to the 2005 release Same !@#$ Different Day, a reworked edition containing new songs alongside older remixes. That same year he launched the first installment of The Lyrics Born Variety Show mixtape series, which reached its seventh volume more than ten years later.

Following an extensive world tour he released Overnite Encore: Lyrics Born Live! in 2006, drawing most tracks from two 2005 Australian concerts while adding studio material. Steady road work established him as a distinctive voice in alternative hip-hop, and in April 2008 Anti- issued Everywhere at Once, which spotlighted his live funk band and production from Jake One. He moved to Decon for 2010’s As U Were, recruiting an eclectic roster that included Sam Sparro, Stanton Moore, and alt-rock act Francis and the Lights.

Latyrx reconvened for the 2011 mixtape Latyrical Madness, Vol 1 and followed with The Second Album in 2013. Returning to solo work, Lyrics Born joined Ivan Neville, Galactic, Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Trombone Shorty, and others on 2015’s Real People, tracked in New Orleans and helmed by Galactic’s Ben Ellman and Robert Mercurio. The career overview Now Look What You’ve Done, Lyrics Born! Greatest Hits! appeared in 2016. He surfaced in Boots Riley’s 2018 film Sorry to Bother You, then issued the full-length Quite a Life later that year with guests Aloe Blacc and Del the Funky Homosapien. The short 2019 release Rapp Nite arrived with Cutso, and he joined a fictional rap crew in the romantic comedy Always Be My Maybe. Amid the COVID-19 pandemic he began interview videos titled Mobile Homies, later adapted into a podcast; the resulting album Mobile Homies: Season 1 surfaced in 2022 with contributions from Shing02, Con Brio, Blackalicious, and additional artists. Vision Board, another self-empowering solo effort, followed later that year.
