Biography
Pigeon John stands out among underground rappers for his eclectic sound and upbeat themes. Although occasionally tagged a Christian rapper due to his optimistic outlook and spiritual references, his accessible topics and wide-ranging tastes in rock and pop allow him to appeal broadly. Since the early 1990s his profile in hip-hop rose through membership in the L.A. Symphony crew and well-regarded solo projects such as the 2003 album Pigeon John Is Dating Your Sister. Later efforts, among them the 2010 release Dragon Slayer, leaned more heavily on live band arrangements and sung choruses, while several tracks landed in commercials, including the 2011 single “The Bomb” and 2019’s “They Don’t Make Em Like Me,” granting mainstream visibility. Positive energy continued on the 2020 set Gotta Good Feelin’, shaped by Motown, reggae, alternative rock, and dance influences.
Born in Omaha, Nebraska to mixed-race parents, John Dust often felt isolated because of his skin color, an experience that followed him after the family relocated to Inglewood, California. He discovered comfort and connection through rapping, and by the early ’90s he was appearing at open mics at Good Life Café, the same spot that helped launch the Pharcyde and Freestyle Fellowship. With childhood friend bTwice he formed the duo Brainwash Projects, and both became members of the larger L.A. Symphony collective.
Once albums from those groups appeared, Dust issued his first solo recording independently in 2001, Pigeon John…Is Clueless, which earned enough modest notice to secure a contract with Basement Records; that label released Pigeon John Is Dating Your Sister in 2003 and Pigeon John Sings the Blues! in 2005. He next aligned with Quannum, an established underground hip-hop label, resulting in the September 2006 album Pigeon John and the Summertime Pool Party. After an EP with Flynn Adam Atkins under the Rootbeer moniker, he returned to Quannum in 2010 for Dragon Slayer, his fifth full-length. Working alongside Quannum artist General Elektriks, the record emphasized live instrumentation over samples. Lead single “The Bomb” promoted the 2011 premiere of Cartoon Network’s live-action film Level Up and became one of his signature tracks.
General Elektriks also produced the follow-up Encino Man, issued in 2014. That same year brought a collaboration with Alpha MC on The Rebound EP. After signing to Dine Alone Records, Pigeon John delivered his seventh album, Good Sinner, in 2016. The digital-only Rap Record arrived in 2017, followed soon after by Rootbeer’s debut full-length, Gold. Following the move of Pigeon John and his family to Portland, Oregon, the dancefloor-oriented single “They Don’t Make Em Like Me” surfaced in 2019 ahead of the wide-ranging Gotta Good Feelin’ in 2020. Further singles appeared throughout the year, among them “Pick It Up Again (Outta My Way)” and “The Greatest.”
