Biography
Michael Larsen, performing as Eyedea, rose to prominence as a sharp-tongued battle rapper within the hip-hop community by claiming victory in successive televised freestyle events near the start of the millennium. Those wins came via commanding appearances at Scribble Jam in 1999, the Rock Steady Anniversary in 2000, and the Blaze Battle the same year. His rapid wit and dense lyricism drew multiple recording-contract offers, though he ultimately aligned with Rhymesayers Entertainment, the Minnesota-rooted independent label then home to underground standouts including MF Doom and Atmosphere. Across the 2000s his recorded output proved extensive: he joined childhood friend and DJ Gregory Keltgen, billed as Abilities, for three reflective hip-hop albums, issued additional material under the Oliver Hart name, and moved outside rap with the jazz collective Face Candy and the alt-rock group Carbon Carousel. The run ended abruptly with his death at age 28 in October 2010.
