Holly Macve blends yodeling and melisma into her distinctive take on Western-inflected noir pop as an alt-country vocalist. Her first full-length effort, the spare Golden Eagle from 2017, conjured images of overlooked American terrain even though its creator grew up on the British Isles. Expanded sonic palettes and heightened emotional stakes marked the subsequent album Not the Girl, while the 2023 single “Suburban House” showcased her natural chemistry alongside Lana Del Rey.

Although born in Galway, Ireland, Macve grew up in Yorkshire, England, spending most of her early years in her grandparents’ household alongside a grandfather who composed classical music and a mother who performed and amassed recordings by icons of blues, country, early rock, and jazz. Having vocalized almost from the moment she began speaking, she later added guitar and piano to her skills; in her late teens she relocated to Brighton and took a café job. There, an open-mike performance caught the ear of Bella Union founder Simon Raymonde, leading to a 2015 contract with the label. Her initial American appearance came at South by Southwest in Austin, Texas, in 2016, after which strong stage showings and an early demo secured support slots with John Grant, Benjamin Clementine, and Ryley Walker. Issued in March 2017 when she turned 21, Golden Eagle was tracked at producer Paul Gregory’s home studio with Lanterns on the Lake and retained its English provenance while evoking desolate American vistas.

The Covers EP arrived that September, interpreting material associated with Melanie, Robbie Basho, the Everly Brothers, and Ryan Adams, yet it closed her tenure at Bella Union. Joint U.K. bills throughout summer 2018 with Jade Bird and Emily Barker, plus journeys to Norway and the United States, sustained her emphasis on live work, though 2019 brought reduced activity, punctuated only by a handful of additional American dates and the independent single “Another Day,” a nod to Emmylou Harris. The worldwide COVID-19 outbreak curtailed further concerts in 2020, yet Macve secured a fresh arrangement with Modern Sky and began tracking a richer batch of material. Her first offering for the imprint was the seasonal standalone “Wonder,” followed in January 2021 by the radio-friendly “Be My Friend,” which distilled her restless, heartache-laden country-pop approach. February’s “Daddy’s Gone,” penned years earlier after her father’s death, and March’s “Eye of the Storm” completed the trio of advance tracks that formed the expansively produced Not the Girl, released that April and reflecting accumulated personal and professional milestones.

After a hiatus of slightly more than two years, Macve resurfaced with the introspective “Beauty Queen” and proved an ideal counterpart to Lana Del Rey on their October 2023 joint release, “Suburban House.”
