Biography
Encouraged by his parents, Ian Moore began violin lessons at six before switching to guitar at fifteen. The Austin-rooted blues-rock musician drew early inspiration from the Beatles, Curtis Mayfield, Stevie Wonder, and Sly & the Family Stone. After gaining road experience as a guitarist alongside Joe Ely, he secured his own headline dates supporting the Rolling Stones and ZZ Top. A Capricorn contract followed, yielding three projects between 1993 and 1995: the self-titled Ian Moore, the Live from Austin EP, and Modernday Folklore.
Modernday Folklore marked the Texan’s first move away from strict blues-rock conventions toward broader sonic territory. Elements of Southern soul, gospel, and Beatlesque pop began to mingle with the guitarist’s signature riffs. Four years passed before Ian Moore’s Got the Green Grass surfaced in 1999, by which point the shift away from blues-rock primacy was unmistakable. While his acclaimed guitar playing remained central, it no longer dictated every song’s direction. The 2000 album And All the Colors continued that balance, pairing exploratory blues passages with meticulously arranged pop material.
Long celebrated for his stage presence, Moore issued his debut full-length concert recording, Via Satellite, in 2001 with touring unit Action Company. Where earlier studio work had alternated between electric blues and atmospheric writing, Via Satellite fused the two approaches to striking advantage. Moore’s first Yep Roc release, the North Carolina label’s 2004 album Luminaria, arrived next. Three years afterward, To Be Loved appeared on Justice.
