Biography
Ignaz Lachner, the younger sibling of Franz Lachner, received his early musical preparation in Augsburg as well as Munich. After relocating to Vienna he pursued lessons under Franz Lachner’s direct guidance; upon Franz’s departure from the organist post at the city’s Lutheran church, Ignaz succeeded him in the role. Conducting proved another area of shared strength, and Ignaz’s career encompassed successive appointments that began with assistant Kapellmeister at the Vienna Court Opera in 1828, continued with the musical directorship of the Stuttgart court in 1831, moved to Kapellmeister of the Munich court opera in 1842, then principal Kapellmeister of the Hamburg theatre in 1853, followed by court Kapellmeister in Stockholm in 1858, and concluded with primary conductor of the Frankfurt am Main orchestra, a post he retained from 1861 until retirement. His catalog of works embraced operas, dramatic Alpenszenen, string quartets, trios, sonatinas, sonatas, and additional chamber music.
