One of the standout acts from Eastern Europe, Inna built a global profile as a vibrant EDM figure, infusing house-tinged dance numbers with warmth and charisma. Born in Romania, she broke through in 2008 via the single “Hot,” which first topped charts at home before spreading across the continent and reaching U.S. dance airplay by 2010. Her affinity for Latin collaborators showed in joint tracks with Daddy Yankee on “More Than Friends” and J Balvin on “Cola Song,” while hip-hop partnerships included Flo Rida on “Club Rocker” and Pitbull on “All the Things.” Progressing through her discography, she leaned into pop textures for the 2017 release Nirvana and wove Latin and Gypsy elements into 2019’s YO. EDM continued to anchor her work, evident on 2020’s Heartbreaker, 2022’s Champagne Problems, and later singles such as “Yummy.”

Elena Alexandra Apostoleanu came into the world on October 16, 1986, in Mangalia, Romania. Singing and dancing had been central to both her mother’s and grandmother’s lives, and young Elena first embraced vocals during family church visits. Her parents spotted her gift early, enrolling her at age seven with vocal coach Georgia Guerra. Though music captivated her, she hesitated to pursue it professionally and instead attended Mangalia’s Colegiul Economic to study political science. An audition for the Romanian ensemble A.S.I.A. proved unsuccessful, leading her toward clerical employment. A colleague overheard her casual singing at work and connected her with the established Romanian production outfit Play & Win. Recording sessions followed, and she briefly performed as Alessandra in 2008, making her television debut that year on the program Teo! She soon adopted the stage name Inna, a childhood nickname from her grandfather. Her debut single, the house-driven “Hot,” surfaced in August 2008, claimed the Romanian summit, traveled widely through Europe, and belatedly entered the American dance chart in 2010. Follow-up “Love” from 2009 quickly climbed to Romania’s Top Five, and her first album, Hot (issued in select European territories as Very Hot), appeared in August, highlighted by the international track “10 Minutes.” Recognition arrived via MTV Europe Music Awards honors for Best Romanian Act in both 2009 and 2010.

Her sophomore effort, I Am the Club Rocker, emerged in September 2011 under continued Play & Win supervision and included guest spots from Flo Rida on “Club Rocker” and Juan Magan on “Un Momento.” The set reached the Belgian and Czech Top 20 while peaking at number eight on Mexico’s album survey. May 2012’s “Caliente” served as a nod to her Mexican supporters, succeeded by the global releases “Tu Si Eu” and “Inndia.” Both “Caliente” and “Inndia” featured on her third album, Party Never Ends, which arrived in March 2013 with additional production input from DJ Frank E, Orange Factory, Steve Mac, and DJ Smash. Reggaeton artist Daddy Yankee joined her on “More Than Friends,” and she embarked on her inaugural U.S. tour in support. Later that year she contributed to Pitbull’s “All the Things” from the EP Meltdown.

Atlantic Records welcomed her to its American roster in 2014, launching the partnership with “Cola Song” alongside J Balvin, which amassed over 62 million streams on major platforms. By then her social reach included more than 750,000 Twitter followers and 12.5 million Facebook likes, while her videos had surpassed two billion collective views. October 2015 brought the self-titled fourth album—released in Japan as Body and the Sun—featuring J-Son on “Bamboreea,” Eric Turner on “Bop Bop,” and Marian Hill on “Diggy Down.” It topped Romanian charts yet underperformed in markets such as Japan and Mexico.

In 2016 Inna united with fellow Romanian artists Antonia, Lori, and Alexandra Stan for the supergroup G Girls, debuting via “Call the Police.” A follow-up single, “Milk and Honey,” appeared in 2017 after Lariss replaced Stan. That year she also joined the judging panel for the Romanian television contest Vocea României Junior and issued her fifth album, Nirvana, in December, blending heightened pop sensibilities with her signature dance and EDM style. Recorded entirely within Romania, it yielded the singles “Gimme Gimme,” “Ruleta,” and the title track.

September 2018 saw the David Ciente-produced single “Ra,” previewing her sixth album, YO, a Spanish-language project rooted in Latin and Gypsy textures that arrived in 2019. The set marked her first output under a new U.S. contract with Jay-Z’s Roc Nation. Heartbreaker followed the next year, signaling a return to EDM-leaning dance pop. In 2021 she scored two Romanian Top 20 hits outside album cycles—“Papa” with Sickotoy and Elvana Gjata, and “Up,” also issued in a Sean Paul version. Her embrace of EDM persisted on 2022’s Champagne Problems, split into parts #DQH1 and #DQH2; longtime associates Alexandru Cotoi, Sebastian Barac, and Marcel Botezan handled production while Latin and reggaeton flavors were integrated. Additional singles emerged, among them “Magical Love,” “Wherever You Go,” and “Yummy,” the last also appearing in a Stefflon Don remix.
