Internal Void arose from Frederick, Maryland, in 1987 yet has often been overlooked within the state’s fertile doom tradition alongside Pentagram, the Obsessed, and Earthride. After circulating several widely exchanged demos, the group issued its debut full-length, Standing on the Sun, in 1993. The recording, praised for its pure Sabbath-derived approach, featured vocalist J.D. Williams, guitarist Kelly Carmichael, bassist Adam Heinzmann, and drummer Eric Little. Persistent professional setbacks, among them the termination of their Hellhound Records contract, delayed further activity until 2000, when ex-Unorthodox drummer Ronnie Kalimon replaced Little for the aptly titled follow-up, Unearthed. Carmichael and Heinzmann later enlisted in Bobby Liebling’s revived Pentagram alongside veteran percussionist Mike Smail (Cathedral, Dream Death, Penance, among others). During the sessions for Pentagram’s Show ’Em How, the pair also completed work on Internal Void’s third album, Matricide.
