Biography
Rapper J-Hood emerged from Yonkers in the footsteps of the LOX and DMX, maintaining a stubborn approach that has carried his career forward since the early 2000s through countless underground mixtapes and extensive guest spots, most prominently on Sheek Louch's "Mighty D-Block" (2003), which reached number 65 on the R&B/hip-hop chart. Born Joshua Hood in Newport, North Carolina, he relocated to Yonkers, New York, in his early years and became deeply immersed in hip-hop as a teenager, drawing his strongest inspiration from 2Pac, Nas, and Jay-Z. An introduction via DMX brought him into contact with Sheek Louch, sparking several years of frequent studio work alongside LOX members within the D-Block collective. Following his appearance on the charting single "Mighty D-Block (2 Guns Up)," which expanded his reach nationally, Hood put out the mixtape Hood Stripes (2004) through the D-Block label. He maintained regular contributions to associated mixtapes over the subsequent period, yet exited D-Block on bitter terms amid dissatisfaction with the shortcomings of its Universal distribution agreement. The rapper asserted an independent identity beyond D-Block via The Hood Is Back (2007) and Judgement Day (2008), opening the door to further self-released projects across the next decade that encompassed Fair Warning (2011) and Fair Warning 2 (2013), 4th Lok (2017), and the Yukmouth collaboration Savages (2018).
