J Rocc

J-Rocc stands among the pioneering turntablists and established the Beat Junkies in 1992 alongside Melo-D and Rhettmatic, yet he has matched those group achievements through extensive solo endeavors. Born Jason Jackson, he took up DJing during the mid-'80s alongside the California outfit PSK. The Beat Junkies quickly emerged as a key influence on instrumental hip-hop's ascent, counting Babu among its core members and later featuring rising talents Shortkut and D-Styles. Federation titles came their way in both 1997 and 1998, prompting a group-wide withdrawal from competition afterward. Further mixes and studio recordings from the Beat Junkies kept appearing steadily. Walkman Rotation marked J-Rocc's initial widely distributed mix album, issued in 1998 via Conception, while he collaborated with Babu on the turntablist collection Soundbombing, Vol. 2 and performed together as the Bumrush Brothers. Following his role as DJ on Madlib's concert tours, J-Rocc issued his debut production album, Some Cold Rock Stuf, through the Stones Throw label in 2011.
