Biography
Jack Peñate surfaced during the mid-2000s with exuberant, radio-friendly pop that drew from the 2-Tone ska revival and the more soul-inflected strain of 1980s pop, echoing fellow British acts the Style Council and the Housemartins. He issued his first full-length effort, Matinee, in 2007, then stepped away for a full decade after 2009’s Everything Is New before returning with the more soulful electro-pop of his third album, After You, in 2019—an effort shaped by his determination to master the production and engineering sides of recording.
Born Jack Fabian Peñate in the London suburb of Blackheath in 1984, he assembled the band Jack’s Basement while still in his teens; schoolmate Felix White, who would later serve as lead guitarist for the neo-Britpop group the Maccabees, played alongside him. Once the members dispersed to separate universities and the band dissolved, Peñate launched a solo project supported by bassist Joel Porter and drummer Alex Robins. His energetic stage presence, marked by constant dancing, helped build a devoted live audience, leading to a deal with the Young Turks label and the 2006 release of his debut single, “Second, Minute or Hour.” Strong early reaction prompted a move to the larger XL Recordings imprint for the 2007 album Matinee, which bore production credits from Tony Hoffer and Jim Abbiss, while his 2009 follow-up, Everything Is New, was helmed by Paul Epworth, known for work with Bloc Party and Kate Nash.
Upon completing the tour behind his second album, Peñate assessed the modest studio equipment and touring instruments he had accumulated and resolved to gain the skills needed to shape his own sonic identity. This pursuit led him to study recording techniques and production, during which he composed hundreds of songs. His reappearance in mid-2019 with the track “Prayer” revealed a more stylized approach that blended acoustic instruments with electronics and layered choral vocals. The resulting album, After You, issued by XL Recordings in November 2019, credits Peñate, Epworth, Inflo, and Alex Epton as co-producers.
