British producer Jamie Lidell earned recognition for his commanding neo-soul singing and stage presence in addition to his initial work crafting groovy experimental techno. He issued several EPs on imprints including Mosquito and contributed to the Mille Plateaux compilation Industrialsamplecoregouchbeat before teaming with fellow techno figure Cristian Vogel for the Super_Collider project in 1999. That collaboration stood out chiefly for the popular cut “Darn (Cold Way o’ Lovin’).” Lidell next delivered his debut solo set, Muddlin Gear, on Warp in 2000. Five years afterward he remained with the label for Multiply, an album that embraced an organic neo-soul sound shaped in large part by instrumentalist and producer Mocky. The 2008 follow-up Jim adopted a comparable approach yet conveyed a noticeably more unforced feel than its predecessor.

For 2010’s Compass Lidell shifted course once more, enlisting Beck, Feist, and members of Grizzly Bear. Its opening track, the title song, unfolded as a spacy folk-blues epic that later featured on the soundtrack to the Rockstar video game Red Dead Redemption. He also contributed writing and vocals to a song on Simian Mobile Disco’s 2012 album Unpatterns before relocating to Nashville. Once he constructed a personal studio there, Lidell used the space to record his next Warp release, the self-titled Jamie Lidell, which appeared in early 2013. His sixth album, Building a Beginning, arrived in 2016 as the first project issued on his own Jajulin imprint.
