Two of his pupils credited this exceptional bass violist with the creation of the seven-string viol. Paris formed the hub of his career, where contemporaries regarded him as a supreme master of the instrument. After training with Hotman, he guided an array of pupils that stretched from Rousseau to Marais. His performances were marked by a cantabile character, and his output encompassed roughly sixty concertos for two viols together with several works for solo viol.
