Biography
Growing up in Ohio, Jermaine Stewart made early television appearances on Soul Train while still a teenager during the program’s Chicago-based era. Before landing a solo contract with Arista in the mid-1980s, he contributed backing vocals to Shalamar, Millie Jackson, Tavares, the Temptations, and Boy George. Between 1984 and 1988 he scored three Top Ten R&B singles for the label, yet his signature track, “We Don’t Have to Take Our Clothes Off,” registered only modestly on the R&B side even as it climbed to number five on the pop charts. Stewart passed away in 1997.
