The Deele first drew widespread attention by introducing Babyface (b. Kenny Edmonds) and L.A. Reid (b. Mark Rooney) to the wider industry. Bobby G. Summers and L.A. Reid assembled the lineup in early-’80s Cincinnati, Ohio, recruiting lead vocalist Carlos “Satin” Greene, Darnell “Dee” Bristol, Stanley Burke, and Kevin Roberson. Babyface had previously performed with Manchild, whose 1977 single “Especially for You” registered a minor R&B entry.

After signing with Dick Griffey’s Solar label, the Deele scored their initial success when “Body Talk” reached Billboard’s Black Singles chart in late 1983. The track peaked at number three on that tally and number 77 on the Hot 100, lifting debut album Street Beat into the upper half of the Billboard 200. Follow-up singles “Just My Luck” and “Surrender” also appeared on Black Singles, yet 1985’s Material Thangz produced only one charting R&B single, the title track at number 14.

During the stretch between Material Thangz and 1987’s Eyes of a Stranger, Babyface and L.A. Reid began attracting notice as producers and writers, scoring hits for Pebbles with “Girlfriend” and the Whispers with “Rock Steady.” Buoyed by that momentum, Eyes of a Stranger became a commercial success, earned gold certification, and yielded the Top Ten pop and R&B single “Two Occasions” plus the number-ten R&B entry “Shoot ’Em Up Movies.” After its release the group entered hiatus while Babyface and L.A. Reid continued their production and songwriting work. In 1993 the remaining members, without Babyface, Reid, and Roberson, reunited for Invitation to Love, which failed to chart. More than a decade later the original quartet of Greene, Bristol, Roberson, and Burke reconvened, releasing the singles “The Only 1” and “All I Want for Christmas” in 2007 and maintaining live performances well into the 2010s.
