Joan Sebastian

Critics and fellow musicians alike hailed Joan Sebastian’s lasting impact on Mexican culture, as leading Latin performers embraced his songwriting. Upon departing a nearby seminary at seventeen, the aspiring creator turned toward popular music and honored his hometown by penning his debut work, “Juliantla.” In 1977 José Manuel Figueroa, Sr. adopted the stage name Joan Sebastian to salute San Sebastian, the locale where he had once been employed. That decision launched an enduring career that brought him an acting part in the Latin series Tú y Yo and the ceremonial title King of Jaripeo. Though diagnosed with bone cancer in 1999, the artist pressed ahead without pause; a year afterward Secreto de Amor captured both song and album honors in the Regional/Mexican field. Joan Sebastian passed away in July 2015 at the age of sixty-four.
