Born to a pair of working musicians, John Boswell spent his early years surrounded by abundant sounds and creative activity. An interest in musical theater took root during high school and expanded while he attended U.C.L.A., where he collaborated on a musical with actor Tim Robbins. Following graduation he pursued theater work, contributing to the Broadway stagings of The Secret Garden and Liza! as well as the Los Angeles productions of Berlin to Broadway With Kurt Weill and The Beautiful Lady. He also served as music director for Judy Collins and Bob Newhart while writing scores for the television series General Hospital and Santa Barbara.

Turning toward more intimate expression, Boswell performed with the vocal trio Wiseguys and issued the carefully crafted instrumental collections The Painter and Kindred Spirits on the modest, short-lived Scarlet imprint. The devoted though limited audience these recordings attracted drew notice from Hearts of Space, which issued Count Me In in 1992 along with the holiday collection Festival of the Heart and later reissued his earlier material. Trust arrived in 1998, followed by Love the next year.
