Born in 1985 in Brighton, East Sussex, England, to a Chinese mother and English father, Redfern opted to channel his creativity through the folk idiom. His voice first drew notice during his time with Tarras, the north-east England ensemble whose original material enabled him to refine his songwriting approach. Following the group’s dissolution he maintained activity in the northern region while making sporadic appearances in London, where he partnered with multi-instrumentalist and arranger Patrick Durkan as well as bassist Joss Clapp.

The 2007 solo release May Be Some Time quickly garnered widespread interest, with several tracks receiving regular airplay on BBC stations. Redfern’s understated, inward vocal delivery lends a mournful tone to his lyrics, prompting numerous listeners to draw parallels with Nick Drake.
