Biography
José Padilla originated elements of the Balearic sound while serving as its definitive chillout selector. Recognition arrived through his residency at the landmark Café del Mar bar on Ibiza, where he supplied music for endless sunsets by weaving together ambient passages, downtempo pop, subdued jazz, film scores, and further textures. Beginning in 1994 he assembled the Café del Mar compilation series, whose volumes and spin-offs soon appeared throughout record shops, restaurants, boutiques, and lounges by decade’s end. Personal productions appeared on these releases, leading to the 1998 launch of his first full-length album, Souvenir. Worldwide demand kept him active as a DJ, prompting additional compilations and mixes such as the Café Solo and Bella Musica collections. Intermittent studio work continued, ending with the 2015 Balearic house album So Many Colours.
Born in Barcelona in 1955, he settled on Ibiza near 1976 and began performing there just as the island gained notice as an early hub of club culture. After appearances at various venues he started his long-running residency at Café del Mar in San Antonio in 1991. Audience requests for recordings of his sets resulted first in bootleg tapes, then in the official Café del Mar series whose opening volume reached stores in 1994. Several years of part-time life in England brought appearances on BBC Radio One’s Essential Mix, and he maintained global engagements that spanned different speeds.
Following scattered singles and compilation tracks, Mercury issued his debut studio album Souvenir in 1998. He remained with the Café del Mar series through its sixth volume in 1999 before releasing Navigator in 2001 on the Spanish label DRO, with U.S. distribution handled by Madonna’s Maverick imprint. The album included Seal’s remix of the single “Adios Ayer” and N’Dea Davenport’s cover of “The Look of Love,” earning a Latin Grammy nomination.
Padilla compiled and composed material for the 2002 soundtrack El Sueño de Ibiza. Further compilations and mixes followed, among them two Café Solo releases, six volumes of Bella Musica, and Café Mambo Ibiza 09. In 2013 he partnered with singer, songwriter, and guitarist Kirsty Keatch on the atmospheric pop/rock album Binary Sun. Producers Mark Barrott, Tornado Wallace, Telephones, and Wolf Müller joined him for the house album So Many Colours, issued in 2015 on Barrott’s International Feel Recordings. José Padilla died of colon cancer on October 18, 2020, at the age of 64.
