Combining R&B, pop, and hip-hop, Karl Wolf rose to prominence as one of Canada’s foremost music figures and cultivated a substantial global audience once his rendition of Toto’s “Africa” turned into a major success. Born Karl Abou Samah in Beirut, Lebanon, in 1979, he shifted with his family to Dubai after conflict erupted in the region. During his teenage years, a friend who had watched the film Teen Wolf bestowed the nickname “Wolf” upon him; resembling the movie’s central character, Karl stood shorter than most basketball teammates yet distinguished himself through quickness and determination. At age 16 the family settled in Montreal, where his musical household—his mother instructed piano while his father performed on drums, guitar, and oud—prompted him to pursue music seriously by mastering guitar and piano, developing his voice, and composing original material. His initial major opportunity arrived in 2001 when two songs he co-wrote appeared on an album by Quebecoise pop singer Gabrielle Destroismaisons. That songwriting achievement drew the notice of Antoine Sicotte from the Montreal-based R&B group Sky; following the departure of lead vocalist Anastasia, Wolf received an invitation to join and contributed to their album Picture Perfect. After Sky disbanded in 2005, Wolf launched a solo career with the independently issued Face Behind the Face in early 2006. Several Canadian hits emerged from that project, among them “Butterflies,” “Referee,” and “Desensitize.” His follow-up, Bite the Bullet, surfaced in late 2007 and performed well domestically, yet broader recognition came in 2009 when the cover of “Africa,” featuring hip-hop artist Culture, climbed to number two on the Canadian pop charts before achieving widespread acclaim in Japan and the Middle East. Nightlife, his third album, arrived in November 2009 and yielded the further international success “Yalla Habibi,” which registered on charts in both Canada and Japan.
