Born on December 4, 1973, Keith Caputo gained prominence as the vocalist for the alternative metal outfit Life of Agony while also maintaining an independent solo career that produced multiple releases under his own name. Life of Agony issued its debut album River Runs Red in 1993, with Caputo’s expressive voice proving central to the record’s impact. Following five years and three albums with the band, he departed in 1997 to pursue solo work. The remaining members attempted to carry on by bringing in Whitfield Crane, formerly of Ugly Kid Joe, yet the effort failed to fill the vocal void, leading the group to disband within a year. Caputo briefly formed Absolute Bloom, though that project ended almost immediately. He relocated to Amsterdam, where he completed his debut solo album Died Laughing in 2000; the release diverged from expectations of Life of Agony listeners while highlighting his songwriting abilities. His second solo album, Perfect Little Monsters, appeared in 2002.

In 2003 Caputo assisted the Brazilian industrial metal band Freax—active from 1983 into the early 1990s—with its reunion and the issuance of its first album, titled simply Freax. That same year he rejoined his former Life of Agony colleagues for several reunion performances, which in turn prompted the band’s new studio album Broken Valley, released in 2005. Additional projects included the 2004 live album Live Monsters and a 2005 contribution to the Roadrunner United compilation, on which he collaborated with Slipknot’s Joey Jordison for the track “Tired 'N Lonely.” Caputo issued another solo effort, Hearts Blood on Your Dawn, in 2006, handling distribution himself through his website along with digital downloads and sales at concerts. Following guest appearances on recordings by Within Temptation, Both Worlds, and Type O Negative, he began work on his next solo album, A Fondness for Hometown Scars, which surfaced in 2008.
